Irene Clephane
Ourselves 1900-1930
Bodley Head
An extremely detailed, lavishly illustrated narrative of early twentieth century English political and social history, by the feminist writer and translator, Irene Clephane. The text, while comprehensive, is highly readable as a fascinating survey of changing ways of life. The many black and white illustrations taken from photographs and magazine and news reports are a strength of the book; almost all aspects of life are illustrated, from women's dresses to street scenes, to channel swimmers, to early flight. Much detail of the Edwardian period. Book condition good: dark blue hardback, without dust jacket, bumped at top and bottom of spine, tear in sindie back cover, though does not affect readability. Inscription inside front cover reads, 'To Mattie, From Uncle David Christmas 1933', which was the year of its publication.
